What Is a Riad? Your Guide to Morocco’s Unique Stays

by | Aug 28, 2024 | Morocco Travel Tips | 0 comments

When planning a trip to Morocco, choosing the right accommodation is essential to fully experience the country’s rich culture and history. The primary types of accommodation in Morocco are hotels and riads. Hotels are similar to what you’d find in other locations around the world. There are local establishments as well as some internationally-known chains. These are what we refer to as “box hotels.” They are largely the same floor plans and they often lack the cultural charm and intimacy that many travelers seek.

If you are interested in a genuine Moroccan experience in an intimate accommodation, then riads are the way to go. They provide traditional hotel services, but the cultural aspects set them apart.

What Exactly Is a Riad

At its core, a riad is a traditional Moroccan home, designed with a focus on privacy and tranquility. The word comes from the Arabic word “ryad,” which means “garden.” This makes perfect sense, as the central feature is an inner courtyard, often lush with greenery and centered around a fountain or small pool. Unlike hotels, where rooms typically face outward, the rooms in a riad face this serene courtyard, creating a peaceful oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Beauty of Moroccan Architecture

Riads are more than just places to stay—they are exquisite examples of Moroccan craftsmanship. From intricate hand-laid tilework to beautifully finished tadelakt walls, every element of a riad reflects the artistry of Morocco’s architectural traditions. The layout also has practical benefits: the inward-facing design helps keep the riad cool during the hot summer months and warm during the colder winter season.

Why Choose Riad Over a Hotel

There are several reasons why a riad offers a more authentic and memorable experience compared to a traditional hotel:

1. Size and Intimacy

One of the most noticeable differences between a riad and a hotel is the size. Riads are typically much smaller, usually offering around 6 to 10 rooms. This smaller size creates a more intimate atmosphere, where personalized service is the norm. Guests often feel more like they are staying in a private home than in a commercial establishment.

2. Location

Riads are usually located within the medina (the old city) of Morocco’s historic towns and cities. The medina is where the heart of Moroccan culture thrives, with its winding alleyways, bustling souks, and vibrant local life. In contrast, most hotels are located outside the medinas, often catering to a mass-market audience. While there are exceptions, staying in a riad places you closer to the authentic Moroccan experience.

3. Traditional Décor

The décor in a riad is typically a blend of traditional Moroccan design with modern comforts. You’ll find intricate tilework, carved wooden doors, and colorful textiles that reflect Morocco’s rich cultural heritage. In comparison, hotels tend to have a more standardized, often sterile design, catering to broader tastes but lacking the unique charm that a riad offers.

4. Personalized Service

In a riad, the treatment is highly personalized. The staff often know each guest by name and take the time to ensure that every aspect of your stay is perfect. Whether it’s freshly brewed mint tea on arrival or customized breakfast options, the service in a riad is designed to make you feel at home. Hotels, on the other hand, offer a more standardized experience, which may be efficient but lacks the personal touch.

5. Privacy and Security

Staying in a riad offers a sense of privacy that is closer to a home than a hotel. Guests are given a key or can ring a bell to enter, much like they would at a private residence. This contrasts with hotels, where anyone off the street can typically walk in, making riads feel more secure and exclusive.

6. Categories of Riads

Riads come in various categories, catering to different budgets and preferences. At the higher end, you’ll find luxurious riads that offer amenities like rooftop terraces, spa services, and gourmet dining. Mid-range riads may focus on comfort and authenticity, providing well-appointed rooms and traditional meals. Budget riads offer a more basic experience but still retain the charm and character that make these accommodations so special. Regardless of the category, all riads offer a level of cultural immersion that is hard to find in a typical hotel.

A Word of Caution About Airbnb in Morocco

While Airbnb can be a convenient option in many countries, it’s important to approach it with caution in Morocco. Many lower-quality riads appear on Airbnb, and because the platform is not regulated here, scams are unfortunately common. These can range from fake reviews to misleading photos and even completely false information. As a foreigner with years of experience living in Morocco, I always advise my clients to avoid taking unnecessary risks with Airbnb. If you do decide to use the platform, proceed with caution and remember that it’s at your own risk.

The calm and serene atmosphere offers a perfect retreat after a day of exploring Morocco’s vibrant cities.
