Atlantic Coast: Rabat to Essaouira

The Atlantic Coast of Morocco stretches from Tangier in the north to Dakhla in the south. The region includes a diverse range of cities and seascapes. The Atlantic beaches vary in character. Some have wide and sandy expanses, while others are rugged with rocky shores. Many of the coastal towns and cities have developed around the beaches. It’s even possible to find a combination of sand dunes and beaches. You just need to know where to look!

Tangier’s coastline offers views of the Strait of Gibraltar, with Spain visible across the water on clear days.

Asilah’s beaches are both tranquil and beautiful. The town is renowned for its annual arts festival in the summer. During the festival, international artists adorn the walls of the medina with vibrant murals.

Morocco’s capital city, Rabat, sits at the mouth of the Bou Regreg River. Its Atlantic coastline is complemented by historical sites such as the Kasbah des Oudaias and the Hassan tower.

You’ll find Casablanca further south on the Atlantic coast. It is also known as the “engine of the country.”  As the primary economic center of Morocco, Casablanca is a bustling metropolis. The Hassan II Mosque is located on the coast and is a well-known landmark of the city. Its majestic minaret can be seen from many locations throughout the city.

Essaouira, a former Portuguese port, is known for its bohemian atmosphere. Its windy coast makes it a favored destination for windsurfing and other water sports. Essaouira’s medina is protected by UNESCO. You’ll find that it is a labyrinth of narrow streets, art galleries, and handicraft shops. It’s perfect for getting lost on purpose! Essaouira is a wonderful town to end a tour with Open Doors Morocco.

I wish I could tell you the wonder of the souks and marketplaces; the brilliant overflowing of spices, olives, fabrics; the witchcraft stalls; the fishmongers; the piles of mint and thyme scenting the airMelissa Manlove, ‘Letter from Morocco’, Travelers’ Tales
