Draa and Southern Oases
Draa and Southern Oases
The Southern Oases Region begins at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains. Three gorgeous valleys lie in this area of Morocco: Draa, Dades and Ziz. These breathtaking landscapes were created naturally by the flowing rivers that carved through the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas mountains. Oases are lush, fertile areas distinguished by the near surface water. Villages were originally built in these areas due to the resources available.
Caravan routes once crisscrossed these valleys. Today, hundreds of mud-brick kasbah walls are still evident. Many contain elaborate details that seem reminiscent of a royal influence on a younger country. Gates and towers are adorned with Intricate carvings of geometric features and motifs. Minarets, surrounded by villages, can be seen from a fair distance.
The Draa Valley
The Draa Valley is a favorite of Open Doors Morocco. We have many friends scattered through its many villages. The Draa is a wonderful area for cultural integration, as people are very welcoming of foreigners. Deep green palm groves and crumbling kasbahs dot the area. It’s not unusual to glimpse families tending wheat fields or transporting alfalfa from field to home as feed for animals.
The Dades Valley
The Dades Valley is a natural wonder situated in the High Atlas Mountains. It is closely related to the Dades Gorges. The river, valley, and gorges go by the same name. This area of the southern oasis is also packed with crumbling kasbahs. Dades Valley is a wonderful place for hiking enthusiasts, as it is possible to hike village to village. You can even stop in to have a meal with a local family. Ask us how to add Dades Valley and Gorges to your itinerary.
The Ziz Valley
The Ziz Valley is, of course, named after the Ziz River. The Ziz valley is a fertile oasis that runs amidst arid landscapes. The valley stretches approximately 250 miles from the town of Errachidia to the Tafilalet, which is the largest Saharan oasis of Morocco.
The Draa and Southern Oasis Region is an area that will keep visitors busy for quite some time!
