Zagora

Zagora is a small town in the Draa valley. Zagora is a vestige left over from the French colonial period. The area was originally known as Tazagourt, Berber for “twin peaks.” The twin peaks refer to the peaks of Jbel Zagora (Mt. Zagora). The summit can be reached in 1-2 hours trekking and commands a beautiful view. The remains of walls give evidence to the presence of the Almoravids in the 11th century.
In Zagora proper, the famous Timbuktu 52 days sign marks the spot from where Timbuktu could be reached within 52 days of walking. We recommend traveling the area by 4×4!

Recommended Length of Stay: 1 day

The popular statement, ‘From here to Timbuktu,’ conjures up images of remote, distant parts of the earth. But Timbuktu is in fact a real city in the west African country of Mali.Kristina Chetcuti, in All the Way from Timbuktu
