Asilah

Forty kilometers south of Tangier sits the surprisingly well-preserved fortified town of Asilah. Historical evidence of life in Asilah exists all the way back to 1500 BCE when the Phoenicians used it as a trade port. Between the Portuguese conquering of the city in 1471, the Moroccan takeover in 1692 (during which the city was bombed by Austrians,) and the Spanish rule in the first half of the 20th century, the city has seen its fair share of conflict, and yet its ramparts and gates still remain fully intact.

Today, as a popular seaside resort complete with modern holiday apartment complexes, it hosts annual music and arts festivals where the winning murals remain on the medina walls for the following year.

Our guests enjoy staying inside the medina or just outside the walls at comfortable riads.

Asilah Medina

Region > Location > Asilah Medina

The pedestrian only walled medina is unique to all the medinas in Morocco. The medina is white with blue and green accents.  Every spring its walls are painted white. During the summer, local and foreign artists come to the town and paint beautiful murals on the walls for the international arts and cultural festival. It seems that each year the artwork is more stunning than the last.  In general, there are less people milling around the medina simply because it’s so much smaller, and a little lesser known as other cities. Shop owners are less aggressive than in other cities throughout the country.
