North Central Morocco and Middle Atlas Mountains

North Central Morocco and the Middle Atlas Mountains are packed full of amazing Morocco destinations. From the spiritual hub of Fes to the roaring falls of Ouzoud, there is something for everyone to see. This region stretches along the north just south of the famous blue city of Chefchaouen to about100 miles north of Marrakech. It covers a lot of ground and appears smaller on the map than it actually is.

A Few Highlights

Fes is one of Morocco’s four Imperial cities. The city is known for its incredible history and architecture. At one time, Fes had a vibrant Jewish history. Remnants of this history are still seen today. You’ll need at least one full day to really explore Fes. Meknes is another of Morocco’s imperial cities. It was the capital of Morocco in the 17th century under the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail. As of May 2023, Meknes is undergoing a massive renovation project. Those of us in Morocco are anxiously awaiting its reopening.

I wish I could tell you the wonder of the souks and marketplaces; the brilliant overflowing of spices, olives, fabrics; the witchcraft stalls; the fishmongers; the piles of mint and thyme scenting the airMelissa Manlove, ‘Letter from Morocco’, Travelers’ Tales
