Oujda

Oujda, located 9 miles (15 km) west of the Algerian border is the largest city in the northeast Morocco. It was originally built by the Berbers in 994 AD, rebuilt by the Marinids, and then occupied by the French.  Each of these cultures has left its mark on the city.

Although Oujda was once on the major trade route from the Algerian border, these days it sees little foreign activity since the border was closed in 1995. However, it is nearby the Mediterranean coast and home to the highly reputed University of Mohammed the First, founded in 1978. This university is currently the third largest university in Morocco.
