Guelmim

Known as the “Gateway to the Desert,” Guelmim is one of the most important towns in the south of Morocco. The ancient walled town consists of of sun-dried red clay homes surrounded by palm groves. The town was founded as a caravan trading post linked to Timbuktu.

Guelmim is well known for its famous weekly Camel Market, held at day break every Saturday. The Guelmim camel market is the largest in Morocco.  Camels are not the only livestock bought and sold at this weekly market.  Sheep, goats, and donkeys are also sold, along with other traditional items sold in Moroccan weekly markets.

Guelmim is also known for its annual Camel Festival every July. If you’re lucky enough to be in the area during the festival, you’ll get to see the traditional dance known as the “Guedra.” The Guedra is performed by women who dance to the beat of a drum made from a guedra, or kitchen pot. As with all Moroccan festivals, the atmosphere is festive and amazing food is served.

Being from the South, your Open Doors Morocco host will show you all there is to know about the camel market.
