Imlil Valley

The Imlil Valley is a popular launching point for those wishing to trek through the High Atlas Mountains, specifically Jbel Toubkal. From just about any point in the valley, lie any number of breathtaking views. While the village of Imlil is the most well-known, many other, lesser known, Berber villages are scattered throughout the area.  Some are perched precariously on the sides of mountains, others are tucked away in valleys. Whether you’d like to escape the heat of the lower regions during summer, spend a day trekking, or visit a Berber family the Imlil Valley is an amazing destination.

Jbel Toubkal, located in the Toubkal National Park, reigns over in the High Atlas Mountains as the highest peak in North Africa at 13,671 feet (4,167 meters). It also happens to be the highest peak in the Arab world. Thousands of hikers and trekking enthusiasts travel 40 miles (63 km) south of Marrakesh each year to reach this amazing Peak. Snow covers the peak all year round which complements the scenery of the region. Those who choose to climb the mountain usually begin in the town of Imlil. From there it is seven hours walk to the refuge. It’s recommended to spend the night at the refuge, as those who attempt to climb the peak too soon can suffer from altitude sickness. The climb from the refuge to the top is around five hours. Even in summer it is possible to reach freezing temperatures beginning around 11,400 feet (3,500 meters). In the winter, the climbing risk increases significantly since the area is covered in snow and ice and prone to avalanches. We can arrange a local guide for those wanting to meet the Toubkal challenge.
