Taroudant

The small city of Taroudant is located in the Souss Valley. It’s  known by the locals as “The Grandmother of Marrakech”. Taroudant resembles Marrakech not only in spirit and trade, but also in appearance, being also surrounded by earthen colored ramparts.

Once serving as the Moroccan capital in the 16th century, today it feels like a small fortified market town known for its local crafts, jewelry and carpets. Strolling and shopping experiences within the souk enjoyed by many. There is also a tannery where you can get up close and personal in, unlike the large tanneries in Fes.

Recommended Length of Stay: 1 day

I've always wanted to get as far as possible from the place where I was born. Far both geographically and spiritually. To leave it behind ... I feel that life is very short and the world is there to see and one should know as much about it as possible. One belongs to the whole world, not just one part of it.Peter Bowles

Region > Location > Taroudant Medina Wall

The Taroudant medina wall is the oldest in Morocco. It’s also considered the third most well preserved city wall in the world. This may be explain why CNN recently named Taroudant one of the “10 Best Medieval Walled Cities.”  The current configuration of the wall was built in the 16th century by the Saadian Dynasty. It was built for the purpose of launching attacks against Spain and Portugal, which had taken much of the Atlantic coastal region. The wall stands eight to 10 meters high and is 1.5 to 4 meters thick, depending on the portion of the wal. The wall is eight kilometers long and contains over 100 crenels along the top.
