Taliouine

The small village of Taliouine is the epicenter for the Saffron Valley in Morocco. It can be purchased in the village for around $4 USD per gram. The harvest season is the middle of October until the middle of November.

It’s interesting to watch the locals picking the saffron throughout the area. The first weekend of November usually brings the and harvest coupled with the Saffron festival.

Glaoui Kasbah

Region > Location > Glaoui Kasbah

Time has not been kind to the construction of this kasbah; however, the view is still stunning. There were several Glaoui Kasbahs scattered throughout the south of Morocco back in the days of the French colonization.  During the early days of the French occupation, they looked for an individual who could control the south of Morocco. The volunteer was, Thami el Glaoui, known as the Lord of the Atals. He and his followers fought against the Sultan and fellow countrymen in their quest for Morocco’s independence in 1944. Glaoui was instrumental in forcing the Sultan out of power in exchange for control of his family’s territory.  By the time the war for independence was over in 1956, the kasbahs they had used to control their men, meet with the French, and protect their family were lying in ruins. The centuries of control the family had over the caravans to the south was gone in what probably seems the blink of an eye to the Glaoui. For the rest of Morocco, the French colonization and Glaoui control left many scars. As Morocco gained independence, the Glaoui were exiled outside the country in humiliation.
